Having completed over 300 skincare consultations this year alone, I have noticed a common thread between clients (in fact, I’ve noticed many) which has to do with cleansers.
What I’ve noticed in a majority of my consultations is that my clients’ cleansing steps are almost always not quite right.
They might be using a cleanser that’s way too drying for their compromised skin, or they’re only using micellar water, or they’re using their oil cleanser on a wet face with wet hands.
In short, there’s usually something for me to correct about their cleansing step.
Why Is Using the Right Cleanser So Important?
This step of our skincare routine is so impactful, yet it’s sorely underestimated.
Getting your cleansing step right not only ensures the skin is free from pollutants, bacteria, excess sebum and other debris, but it also ensures we’re maintaining a healthy pH balance which supports barrier function, and ultimately reduces issues like transepidermal water loss.
So how do you know if you’re using the right cleanser?
Typically, milky or cream cleansers tend to be well-suited to normal to dry skin types, while gels and foaming cleansers tend to be targeted towards combination to oily skin types.
But now that we have a lot of active ingredients found in cleansers, it can be a little bit of a minefield selecting the right one for you.
Your cleanser shouldn’t leave your skin feeling stripped and sandpapery. If that’s how your skin feels before putting the rest of your skincare on, it might be worth opting for a more hydrating cleansing formula.
I see acne-prone clients make the error of having super drying cleansing steps, which contributes to further barrier impairment, so my strategy is always to go with gentler, more hydrating cleansers where I suspect we might be encountering barrier issues.

There is a cleanser that’s just landed at Adore Beauty which I think is going to be a huge hit with dry, dehydrated and even compromised skins – it’s the
Viviology Lipid Cleanser 150mL.
If you’ve followed me on
socials or listened to the
Beauty IQ podcast, you may recall me being obsessed with Murad’s Prebiotic 4-in-1 Cleanser which sadly got discontinued (RIP), well, the Lipid Cleanser is a pretty close dupe, and it’s under $50.
What You Need to Know about the Viviology Lipid Cleanser.

This is the perfect cleanser to use as your first cleanse in a double-cleanse routine.
Now, I hear you ask, what’s a double-cleanse routine?
Double cleansing involves using an oil-based formula first to help break down oil-soluble impurities like makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum.
Your secondary cleanse is with a water-based cleanser, which helps to remove water-soluble impurities like sweat and other debris from the skin, leaving it very effectively cleansed so the rest of your skincare applied afterwards can do the best job possible.
The Lipid Cleanser has a comforting gel-like texture that’s packed with prebiotics, ceramides and amino acids to support barrier function and provide hydration and nourishment during the cleansing step, rather than leaving the skin stripped and dehydrated.
It’s best suited to normal to very dry skins, but I’d go as far as to say that it’s suitable for all skin types.
It’s made in Australia and also contains Australian botanical extracts which provide antioxidant protection.
Linseed Oil and a plant-based surfactant called Polyglyceryl-6 effectively break down impurities for a thorough, yet hydrating cleanse.
It’s a soap-free formula with no fragrance, so it’s suitable for skins dealing with barrier issues.
How to Use the Viviology Lipid Cleanser.

I know, you’re probably thinking ‘Jo, we all know how to use a cleanser, you just slap it on your face in the shower and rinse it off’... but do you, though?
Cleansers like this one should actually be used on a dry face with dry hands to begin with, so I usually recommend to my clients that they start their double cleanse at the basin, and finish it in the shower.
You’ll want to massage the Lipid Cleanser into the skin well for about 30 seconds, including the eye area (though I always suggest keeping your eyes closed), then you can add water to emulsify the product, continuing to massage the face to help remove the cleanser and the impurities it’s dissolved.
You can then rinse your face and follow with your next cleanser in the shower (or at the basin if you prefer), which could be the
Viviology Gentle Foaming Cleanser or something targeted towards your concerns like Cerave’s
Blemish Control Cleanser or Murad’s
Essential-C Cleanser.Tune into the below to get to know this affordable Aussie cosmeceutical skincare brand better.
Final Verdict.
Could this replace your existing oil cleanser? Yes, it could.
At $48, it’s on the pricier end of the scale, especially when we consider some of our most popular cleansers here at Adore Beauty, but I will say you certainly do get quality, and a little bit goes a long way with this product.
If you’ve got dry, dehydrated and/or compromised skin that you know is going to suffer this winter, it may be one worth adding to cart.
