Is niacinamide good for skin?
Niacinamide is like the teacher’s pet of skincare ingredients. An all rounder, good-at-everything serum.
A quiet achiever some might say, keeps their head down, gets the job done giving you even, balanced skin and doesnt show off about it.
That’s why it’s one of my favourite skincare ingredients!
Mostly because I’ve spoken many times before about how when I first got into beauty, it was one of the first ingredients that really helped even out my textured skin and give me a brighter complexion.
So any time a brand releases any type of niacinamide product, my ears and my face are very awake and listening.
The latest brand releasing their own niacinamide that promises to target dark spots, age spots and sun spots, plus give you more radiant skin after just a few uses is L'Oréal Paris.
I tasked a few of my AB colleagues (and myself) with different skin tones and concerns to road-test this serum for just under 8 weeks, keep scrolling for our honest thoughts…
What Does Niacinamide Do for Skin?
Key Benefits of Niacinamide for Skin:
Strengthens the Skin Barrier
Regulates Sebum (oil)
Reduces redness and inflammation (calms inflamed, acne-prone, or sensitive skin)
Brightens and evens skin tone (something I can personally vouch for)
Antioxidant protection (defends against environmental stressors that contribute to premature ageing)

In the canon of niacinamides, what makes the L'oreal bright reveal one stand out? Let’s bring in the experts...
Board Certified Dermatologist Dr Lee-Mei Yap weighs in, she says:
"Dark spots are also known as hyperpigmentation and they are caused by an overproduction of melanin in our skin.
There are a couple of factors that can cause them such as sun exposure, ageing, hormonal factors, inflammation or trauma to our skin.
Niacinamide is one of my favourite skincare ingredients as it improves hydration, strengthens our skin moisturise barrier and importantly it reduces pigmentation.

L’Oréal Paris Bright Reveal 10% [Niacinamide + Amino-Sulfonic Acid] Dark Spot Serum Reviews:
Sadaf, Senior Beauty Editor.

I was so dedicated to trialling this niacinamide, I even took it with me on holidays to Japan!
While I have seen some dark spots forming on my face I can’t categorically say that I’ve seen them lessen in appearance after only 8 weeks, however I predict if I use this serum consistently and go through a few bottles, over time I’m sure I would have to see some results.
The most noticeable thing for me was the softness of my skin and even more noticeable was how much brighter my complexion looks.
After a fortnightly check-in I noticed I was waking up with more radiant-looking skin:

After about 4 weeks of use, my skin was looking even and well-rested.
As someone who experiences uneven skin tone and ashiness, niacinamide in my skincare routine is a must and I loved how this made my face look brighter, even and well-rested.
One of the claims is that it “refines” the skin, and at the time I couldn't put my finger on it but I think that's what it is too, when I look at the mirror now, I can see my face looks slightly more refined and as someone in their thirties, this is very welcomed.
It's not too tacky either, it has more of silky, gel texture that applied kind of watery on first contact but absorbs and leaves skin feeling fresh not sticky.
Chloe, Content Coordinator.

"Not to brag or anything but I haven’t really experienced pigmentation, besides from my freckles, until this year.
Around December last year my face decided to start growing the biggest pimple I’ve ever experienced, it popped late Jan and in early Feb, conveniently during the time of my engagement party, developed into a dark purple-ish acne mark that stayed on my face.
My mum took one look at me and urged me to get laser before the wedding, which I contemplated.
It must have been chance because this was around the time the Bright Reveal landed on my desk, I’ve been using it for the last eight weeks and I have to be honest, I never really considered using a niacinamide serum for pigmentation, I’m more of an AHA or vitamin C girl.
As I continued to use the Bright Reveal, the mark got lighter and lighter, I literally have no selfies makeup-less with the mark because I was constantly trying to hide it, but you can see in my early Feb selfie below that it is still very visible even with a medium coverage foundation.

The serum has a milky, light creamy consistency it’s quite fragrant but feels very hydrating on the skin.
The visible improvement whilst using the Bright Reveal serum has convinced me to continue consistently and am very grateful I no longer have to spend a bajillion dollars on laser whilst saving for a wedding."
Jas, Beauty Editor.

"I want to preface my review by saying that I don't currently have any prominent dark spots or post-acne scars.
However, as a fair-skinned gal, I have some pigmentation on my forehead and nose from years of neglecting SPF as a moody teen.
My skin texture also fluctuates, partly due to my role as a beauty editor and trying new products.
The change of seasons hasn't been kind to my dry skin either. After three weeks of using the L'Oréal Paris Bright Reveal 10% Serum, I've noticed an improvement in the overall look and feel of my skin. It feels softer, smoother, and more even-toned.
A few of my AB colleagues even commented on its "healthy glow."
Admittedly, I think I've been sleeping on niacinamide (look away, derms!), but after experiencing the benefits of this affordable serum, I think I'll have to make a permanent space for it in my skincare routine."
