If there’s one motto in life I live by, it's ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’
That’s why I've eaten the same thing for breakfast for the last two years. I guess you can say I’m a creature of habit.
So, when I heard one of my holy grail skincare products, the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, had been reformulated, a million thoughts raced through my head:
‘Would it be as good as the OG?’
'Will my skin still love it?'
‘Why is this happening?!'
After a mild freak out, I composed myself and got a tub of the reformulated version to compare it to the previous iteration.

What Is Laneige?
In case you missed it, Laneige is a luxury Korean beauty brand that became a household name thanks to their signature water technology.

What Is the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask?
According to Vogue, one tub of the original Laneige Water Sleeping Mask was selling every 11 seconds around the world.
The gel cream moisturiser promises soft, supple skin full of life and moisture after just one application.
And after going through 3 tubs of this cream in the last year alone, I can confirm that it 10000% lived up the hype.
Here's what the previous packaging looked like.
It made me wonder why the brand would change such a beloved product...
But after some research, I found out the 'water sleeping mask' formula has actually been reformulated five times since it first launched in 2002.
Why? To bring our skin the best of the best as technologies and ingredients progress!
This is likely why the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask continues to be a best-seller, despite having gone through a few mini makeovers.
How Is the New Laneige Sleeping Mask Different?
Introducing, the upgraded Laneige sleeping mask!
Aside from the sleek minimalist new packaging, how does the new version compare to the old formula?
Let’s break it down.
The new Laneige Water Sleeping Mask 70ml contains similar ingredients to the previous 2015 formula, with a few strategic swaps for even brighter, bouncier-looking skin.
- Probiotic Complex – Contains lactobacillus ferment lysate (made from green tea probiotics) to strengthen the skin barrier whilst restoring moisture.
- Squalane – Derived from sugar cane, this well-loved ingredient is known for its ability to mimic natural lipids of oils found in the skin.
- Trehalose - A glucose derivative known as ‘resurrection sugar’ that holds onto moisture, and is used to help bring plants back to life when they've experienced extreme weather conditions.
- Plus vitamin E and glycerin for more hydration and skin barrier support.
The result? Soft, supple skin full of life and moisture.
My Laneige Water Sleeping Mask Review.
Before we get into my review, let’s look at the packaging and price.
The 2015 formulation retailed at $44 for 70ml, whereas the reformulated mask is priced at $48 for 70ml.
The mask is still housed in the iconic blue jar, with a chic facelift on the font and less packaging.
Now for the moment of truth, the texture.
The previous sleep mask had a slipper gel-like texture that melted into the skin seamlessly.
I was praying and hoping that the new version would have the same texture and I’m happy to confirm that it indeed does.
Here are some things I noticed in comparing the new version to the older formula:
- The texture is stickier and more 'mask-like', so it took longer to sink into my skin.
- The consistency is thicker, meaning I wouldn't use it as a day moisturiser like I used to use the old version.
- The iconic scent hasn't changed, which is a relief! The brand's ‘sleepscent' of orange flower, rose and sandalwood is both as deeply relaxing and oddly satisfying as before.
Final Verdict...
So, is the reformulated version AS good as it’s predecessor?
If you can believe it, it’s BETTER. Big call I know.
Over the last 6 weeks, each time I’ve applied the Laneige sleeping mask before bed, I’ve woken up to plump, hydrated, BRIGHTER skin.
Through consistent late nights, a little too much sugar, alcohol, and lots of events, the Laneige Water Sleep Mask has been one of the few products that has instantly delivered on its promise.
To be honest, without this mask, I’m not too sure I’d have been able to get away with makeup-free days, especially this past month.
My ONLY gripe is that I can't use this daily in the morning like I could before.
But it’s not enough to deter me from repurchasing, and yes, it's worth the extra $4.

Laneige Radian C Cream 30ml is the brand's new hydrating daily moisturiser that promises to help with the appearance of skin tone, texture and dark spots.
The Radian-C Superblend is formulated with 8.5 per cent of a stable form of vitamin C, a patented brightening ingredient called Melasolv said to have 20 times the brightening effect of niacinamide (wow) and vitamin E for hydration.
2. Laneige Cream Skin Mist.
