There’s no denying the transformative power of a red lip.
But it's the nude and earthy lip shades, or ‘new neutrals’ that deserve a moment for anchoring our everyday looks.
I remember trying my first ‘nude lipstick’ when I was younger, it was my mum’s (
who is much fairer than me) and back then there wasn’t much of a wide shade range, nor were the formulas as creamy and elevated as they are now.
I was walking around thinking I looked really cool, but in reality it looked like I had dipped my lips in dried yoghurt - not so cool.
Thankfully, we’ve come a long way with an array of brands offering different shade iterations of ‘neutral’ that include a more diverse range of pinks, browns and other earthy hues that we now have at our ‘add to cart’ fingertips.
Now, I’m never short on nude lipstick options; I am in constant neutral lipstick heaven!
Very exciting. Mostly because my whole wardrobe and general ‘vibe’ is neutrals and chocolate/brown colours.
You see, the endless appeal of neutral lip shades comes down to the fact that they suit almost every skin tone (and match everything in our closets).
Below, I’ve assembled four neutral and brown shade lipsticks I can’t stop wearing at the moment.
From a pinkish/brown MAC lipstick to a deeper brown hue from the house of Huda Beauty, these lustrous lippies are timeless and so versatile.
Not bound by any season, they can be worn year round and that’s what makes any of these shades the perfect handbag, car or even work desk accessory!
M.A.C Cosmetics Lustreglass Lipstick.

Shade: 'Hug Me'.
Of course my roster of best nude and neutral lipsticks starts with one from M.A.C Cosmetics.
One of the best MAC brown nude lipstick shades, 'Hug Me’ definitely gives 'Velvet Teddy' a run for its money.
A fresh take on a light brown lipstick but with a pinkish undertone, MAC Hug Me delivers more of a sheer wash of colour that’s buildable.
One of the best neutral lipsticks for dry lips, its hydrating formula also means chances of feathering during the day are very low.
With a lustrous texture that feels weightless and glides on the pout like a dream, this shade is the one that looks most like ‘my lips but better.’
Its creamy formula infused with raspberry and extra virgin olive oils instantly made my dry, cracked lips feel nourished too.
This would be my top pick for an everyday lipstick, best everyday lipstick for olive skin as well as the most comfortable lipstick to wear all day.
Huda Beauty Power Bullet Cream Glow Lipstick.

Shade: 'Habibi'.
While the classic ‘neutral’ shade never goes out of style, the resurgence of ‘90s beauty trends has brought with it the love of burgundy, chocolate and brown hues which for a nineties beauty lover like me is beaut!
Think: Hailey Bieber’s MAKE UP FOR EVER Lip Liner in shade ‘
Anywhere Caffeine’, or get inspired by the beauty looks of pretty much every fashion and beauty tastemaker there currently is (and was in the nineties).
Huda Beauty’s ‘Habibi’ sits in that '90s brown lipstick category…
It’s the embodiment of the perfect in-between nude and brown shade. I would say this is more of a cool toned nude lipstick!
And can we please talk about this chic bullet and the gorgussss case it comes in?
At first glance I thought “oooh she looks dry” but as soon as I swiped it on my lips, it was creamy and had a beautiful, smooth (even slightly glossy) finish.
This neutral-y brown lipstick also contains a peptide complex, hydraberry and sea fennel.
Maybelline Ultimatte Slim Lipstick.

Shade: 'More Taupe'.
As soon as I laid eyes on this shade, I knew I had to try it.
It’s like Maybelline dreamed up the perfect Sadaf shade and put it in a sleek little bullet.
One swipe deposits a supreme shade of terracotta brown; I’ve never really seen a colour like it.
I know this I said these shades can be worn every season, but this burnt brown lipstick shade is truly the perfect autumnal or winter shade.
Again, I thought this one looked quite dry when I first opened it but was pleasantly surprised that it felt comfy and cushiony on the lips.
Next time, I think I’ll swipe a tiny bit on my eyes and cheeks too to create a tied together tonal lewk.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Satin Lipstick.

Shade: 'Peach Amber' and 'Rose Brown'.
Yes I know this technically takes the list to five, but it's not my fault Anastasia Beverly Hills have crafted both the best neutral lip shade and the best brown lip shade for everyday wear.
One of the more peachy nude lipstick shades, Peach Amber imparts more of a warm, pinkish shade and if you prefer a shade that skews a bit darker, then Rose Brown is the one to reach for.
Both of these shades ensure you look instantly put together, making them the perfect lippie for throwing in your bag if you have after-work drinks on!
