Now, she works in PR, Communications and Content strategy, and literally gets paid to play with lipstick and highlighters all day.
Hair loss is one of those topics that sadly is often still shrouded in secrecy and shame. But thinning or fine hair, as well as rapid hair loss, is actually far more common than we think.
So if you’ve been feeling a little crestfallen over your locks, the first thing to remember is you’re not alone. The second, is that there are loads of tried and true ways to stop thinning hair - more on that in a tick.

What Causes Thinning Hair In Females?

It turns out there’s a big difference between balding in men and hair loss in women. In men, hair is connected to the male secondary sex characteristics, so those same hormones that experience a surge in puberty, affecting the muscles and body hair.
But with women, the condition or state of our hair is a reflection of what is happening inside our bodies.
“Hair loss reflects a deficiency or disturbance in the body,” trichologist Anthony Pearce told Beauty IQ.
“Because hair is a non-essential tissue, it’s often the first thing to show signs of internal disturbance,” Anthony said.
Plus, women are more prone to some types of nutrient deficiencies, which can often cause hair thinning and hair loss. Nutrients including “iron, vitamin D, iodine and zinc” are crucial for maintaining healthy hair, Anthony said, and women are more likely to experience a deficiency in one or more of these vitamins and minerals.
Us ladies also have an increased likelihood of developing an autoimmune condition, such as a thyroid problem, which can also affect hair loss.
What fun.

What About Hair Loss After Giving Birth?

Anthony says it’s perfectly normal for new mothers to experience some hair thinning a couple of months after giving birth.
“It generally happens about two months after the baby is born. The hair is going back to its normal growth levels and the woman’s hormones are returning to their pre-pregnancy state.”
However, losing hair during pregnancy is a “real red flag”.
“A woman's hair should be better than ever during pregnancy, because of the hormone increases,” Anthony explained.
“So if her hair is falling out when she is pregnant, she has been allowed to go into pregnancy with low nutrient levels and her body cannot support two human beings. She needs to seek immediate medical attention.”
You can learn more about that on our podcast, here or listen below:

So, How Do You Stop Thinning Hair?

“The first thing would be to find out what’s causing it,” Anthony advises.
Book in an appointment with your GP or a trichologist, a person who specialises in hair loss, in order to find the source of the problem.
“Establish where it’s coming from, treat the disturbances, then use topical products to help accelerate the recovery of your hair,” Anthony advises.
The most important advice? Don’t ignore the problem
“Do not dismiss it. I always say to women, don’t think this is just something that inevitably happens when you get older. You can fix it.”

What Thinning Hair Treatments Are Best?

Just like skincare, choosing the right haircare products requires a holistic approach.
It’s about selecting the right shampoo and conditioner, as well as a special, targeted treatment product. L’Oreal has an entire range of professional-grade haircare products designed specifically for targeting thinning hair.
The Serioxyl range features two shampoos (one for coloured hair and one for natural locks), as well as a conditioner, along with several coloured hairsprays and intensive serum treatments
But the star of the show is the L'Oréal Professionnel Serioxyl Denser Hair Serum.
This is a daily hair treatment recommended for women wanting denser-looking, more luscious hair. It should be applied once a day, everyday, for three months and can be used morning or night.
It’s designed to be used on dry or towel-dried hair, and applied directly to the scalp. Here is a step-by-step guide.
  • Divide the hair into four equal parts
  • Apply one droplet of product per section of the scalp, so using for full droplets worth of product per day
  • Very gradually apply the solution by moving the dropper along the part line, directly onto your scalp
  • Gently massage the serum into your scalp
  • Repeat on the other sections of hair

What Ingredients Are In The Serioxyl Serum And How Does It Work?

Meet the two superstar thinning hair remedies in this serum that help stimulate hair growth:
STEMOXYDINE 5%: A molecule that mimics the ideal environment required for stem cell stimulation. It helps to wake up dormant hair follicles and assists in the creation of new hairs. It acts as an alarm clock, waking up the hair from the dormant phase of the hair growth cycle.
RESVERATROL: A potent type of polyphenol (plant-based nutrient, also found in red wine, berries and dark chocolate), which has been derived from antioxidant skincare products. This ingredient helps to protect against free radical damage.
