I'm about to tell you about a hair oil. Wait, wait. Hear me out.
Ok, so I know it can seem completely counter intuitive to put more oil on your hair, when we’re all trying to avoid getting oily locks in the first place.
But just like how some oily skin types actually respond really well to face oils, the same can be said for those of us with oily hair. Trust me on this one.
What's Up With Oily Hair?
Often our bodies overproduce oil because they think our scalps are too dry and in need of more moisture. So they get to work pumping out the oil to compensate.
Oily tresses can actually be your scalp or hair’s way of telling you that it’s actually dry and dehydrated. It needs you to come in and save the day!
There are loads of nourishing hair oils and serums out there that can help, but my favourite is R+Co Neon Lights Dry Oil Spray, because it’s the ultimate lazy girl’s hair product.
Why Is This Hair Oil So Good?

Often traditional hair oils require a bit of extra skill. You’ve got to make sure you disperse the correct amount of product and don’t go overboard, otherwise you just look like a grease-ball.

How To Style Your Hair Using the R + Co Neon Lights Dry Oil Spray:
There are two ways I like to use this product:
1. Spray it onto the ends for extra hydration and shine
- Hold the can about 30 cm away from your head
- Pick up a large section of your hair by the ends and gently spray the product onto the tips, fluffing and “butterflying” the hair as you go.
- If you want a natural-looking curl, you can scrunch the hair and the oil will help it “set” into a nice beachy wave
2. Use the holding power of the oil to create a chic, slick up-do
If your hair is too dirty to wear out, but you still want to look cute, the perfect solution is a slicked-up ponytail or bun. Funnily enough, the dirtier your hair is, the better here. If your hair is super clean, it will be too soft and slippery and your style won’t hold properly.
- Using a brush, comb or your fingers, scrape your hair back off your face into a ponytail
- Holding your ponytail with one hand and the dry oil with the other, gently spray the slicked-back parts of your hair with the spray, focusing on areas where you tend to get flyaways
- Run your brush, comb or your fingers through the hair again to work the product in
- Secure your hairstyle with a hair tie, scrunchie or bobby pins
- Once you’re done, feel free to spray the hair a final time for an extra-chic look or to tame any stubborn flyaways
What Hair Types Is This Spray Good For?
Dry and damaged hair: A light spray of this oil onto the ends of your hair can can keep them nourished and hydrated, preventing split ends and that dreaded crunchy feeling
Curly and frizzy hair: Give your hair a bit of extra TLC by gently spraying this onto your tresses (avoiding the roots) and working it through with your hands. If you want to hide your dirty hair by styling it into a slick ponytail or bun, brush your hair, spray it onto the crown and sides of your head, then style away.
Hair with wild flyaways: If you have loads of baby hairs, especially if you’re a new Mum recovering from postpartum hair loss, you might find those pesky flyaways never seem to stay away when you want to pop your hair up into a slick up-do. Spray this onto your flyaways, then slick them back with a brush and style your hair into a tight ponytail or bun.
