What is Oral Care?
Oral care and otherwise good oral hygiene means taking care of and cleaning your teeth, gums and surrounding structures.
Three vital oral care techniques include brushing your teeth (with a regular or
electric toothbrush), flossing and using interdental brushes.
According to Dr. Philip Bliss, using these
oral care products can help to “remove as much plaque as possible… Plaque forms very quickly around the teeth and contains a high concentration of bacteria that can lead to gum disease and decay and often early tooth loss.”
Some of the best oral health care tips also include avoiding too many sugary foods, and catching up with your dentist for a check-up regularly.

What is the Importance of Oral Care?
One of the most important reasons for maintaining good oral care is prevention. Dr. Philip Bliss explains: “Good oral hygiene is essential, apart from the obvious such as preventing bad breath, gum disease and decay, poor oral hygiene is associated with many systemic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and even now with worsening the effects of COVID-19.”
Consistent oral care, which involves regularly brushing your teeth with a
good toothpaste, can help to reduce and
fight decay, discoloration and other mouth diseases. This makes
child oral health care particularly important.
On a cosmetic level, the purpose of oral care is to keep your breath fresh, your smile sparkling and your whole mouth feeling good.
What is the Best Oral Care Routine?
The best oral care routine for you is really going to depend on your age, needs and preferences. For example, if you’re a parent looking for gentle baby oral care or infant oral care, the toothpaste you choose is going to be very different to the person looking to
whiten their teeth.
For instance, Dr. Philip Bliss suggests that it is important for children to use a toothpaste containing fluoride to “help fight tooth decay”, whereas it’s okay for adults to swap to ‘natural’ toothpaste as long as they are brushing correctly.
No matter your age, Dr. Philip Bliss recommends that brushing your teeth twice a day should be a consistent element of your routine, along with regular flossing or the use of interdental brushes.
To complement these steps are a range of additional oral care products you can add to your routine to help cleanse your mouth, or
enhance your teeth.
