The use of perfume dates back thousands of years, with the world’s oldest surviving perfume estimated to be over 4000 years old. Traditionally created from oils extracted from flowers, aromatic plants and other precious materials, modern perfumes also usually contain synthetic ingredients, often to replace animal-derived ingredients such as ambergris.
Eau de Parfum is one of the most popular perfume types, with a wide variety of scent families and types available.
The main difference between these three types of perfumes is usually the concentration of the pure perfume essence. Eau de Parfum is usually stronger and contains 10-20% essence, Eau de Toilette is often lighter and fresher, containing 4-15% perfume essence and Eau de Cologne is weaker still, usually containing around 2-5% pure perfume essence.
Eau de Parfum is gender-neutral – the name refers to the concentration of the pure perfume essence. While some fragrances can lean more masculine or feminine, the best perfume is one that smells good to you, and works with your particular body chemistry.
There are many factors that can influence how a fragrance smells, and it’s important to try a scent in a variety of situations. Some perfumes are better suited to warmer or cooler months. The temperature, and your body heat and acidity can affect the way a perfume smells on you.
You can try applying less, or on pulse points that are further from your nose – the wrist isn’t always the best place for a scent. Stronger scents can be applied on pulse points such as the back of your knees.
If you have found that you’ve tried the fragrance out multiple days in a row and it doesn’t quite smell the same as it did before, try switching up your perfume or taking a break - you may have gotten used to the scent, and can’t smell it on yourself anymore - this doesn’t mean that other people can’t. Ask the people around you what they think. After all, fragrance can be a journey shared.
Each full-size fragrance (30ml+ per bottle) purchased through The Scent Room comes with a matching sample vial.
